Online Advertising Gets More Respect

10 April 2012 - Filed under Mobile Advertising + Online Advertising + Search Marketing (PPC)

Consumer trust in online advertising in growing.  Advertising viewed in search engine results is trusted by 40% of respondents in a recent Nielsen survey, which is up from 34% in 2007. Also, sponsored ads on social networking sites were deemed credible by 36% of survey respondents.

Increased trust for online search and display ads should give advertisers more confidence in allocating ad dollars to online advertising. Ad relevance has increased as well, with 42% of consumers finding ads in search engine results relevant, while 33% find online banner ads to be relevant.

In addition to search engine ads, many companies have been considering paid advertising on social networking sites, because of the perceived high level of trust consumers place in recommendations and opinions. Brands should be watching this emerging ad channel as it continues to grow.

Also, according to the survey, about one third of respondents trust display ads on mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones. Approximately 29% of consumers said they trust mobile phone text ads, which is an increase of 21% since 2009.
